There are places that are ideal for the flourishing of imagination, where the heart arrives before reason, and the eye sees without the need to look. Here, the mind is free—it surrenders to uncertain horizons. For Nicola Cappellari, some watery landscapes of the Veneto region become just such places, where time is governed by the tide and by a constant, gravitational, slow, and mysterious movement that oscillates between flowing and retreating, shaping both the landscape and its perception.
The volume, presented in a leporello format, embraces the tide through a pagination that expands and contracts—an invitation to accept it naturally, along with its invisible logic, in order to align oneself with the infinite universe.
The photographs reproduced in this book are scans of Nicola Cappellari’s original silver gelatin prints and are accompanied by a geography of words—a sentimental map created in letterpress using vintage type from the Tipoteca Italiana archive. Designed by Roberto Vito d’Amico.

Hi! I am Steve, a professional in the field of photography and visual arts, with a background as a curator, art director, and educator.
Venetian on my father’s side, with a French surname that dates back to Napoleon’s campaigns, and a soldier from around Montpellier. My mother was born in Belgium to a Dutch family. My grandfather from Hoboken, New Jersey, on the Hudson River. I grew up a bit here and there; I currently live in Paris.
I have known the world before smartphones, computers, and the internet. Before low-cost flights. The backseat of my father's car was my window. Studies pushed me to embrace complexity, a quite observation. A gaze that "touches," that dares in some way, that strives to forge a connection.
I spent the past 20 years questioning the role of images in society.
