Exhibition:
Dis/close by Ng Sai Kit, Hong Kong
September, 2014
I wrote the critical essay for the catalog of the exhibition at Osage Gallery in Hong Kong, curated by Chloe Chu, and Yohsuke Ishizuka.
If Instagram killed photography, what is Ng Sai Kit doing on it? For the last two years, the established Hong Kong photographer has been an active Instagrammer. Rather than your usual selfies, food-porn, and travel diary however, Ng’s Instagrams of abject spaces and imageries probe the found physical and cultural frames that are enclosed within his own. Through Ng’s series of Instagram works, dis/close aims to investigate how social dynamics are embedded within our information networks, and technological hardware, determining what and how we see, as well as the frictions and synergies between social media platforms and photographic languages.

Hi! I am Steve, a professional in the field of photography and visual arts, with a background as a curator, art director, and educator.
Venetian on my father’s side, with a French surname that dates back to Napoleon’s campaigns, and a soldier from around Montpellier. My mother was born in Belgium to a Dutch family. My grandfather from Hoboken, New Jersey, on the Hudson River. I grew up a bit here and there; I currently live in Paris.
I have known the world before smartphones, computers, and the internet. Before low-cost flights. The backseat of my father's car was my window. Studies pushed me to embrace complexity, a quite observation. A gaze that "touches," that dares in some way, that strives to forge a connection.
I spent the past 20 years questioning the role of images in society.
